Compost Making
Sugar industries have made dramatic changes with regard to expanding their crushing capacities and increasing the other allied areas such as co-generation and distillery. On the top of these things there are some innovative sugar mills are utilizing most of the byproducts of sugar mill in increasing the economic viability of sugar mills. This is possible by converting the value added products into a resource generating outfits. In this regards the sugar mills produces press mud cake to the extent of 4% on cane weight. This is derived out of the cane crushed in the sugar mills and this also has around 10-12% wax material which hinders the decomposition of press mud under natural conditions.

Additionally, the sugar mills which are having distillery units are facing many fold problems in disposing their effluents. These effluents are having very high economic value with some trace toxic elements. Therefore to address the issue of disposal of effluents in-conjunction with value addition to the press mud cake in the sugar industry there is a practice to prepare a bio-compost. The bio compost is prepared with the hormonal mixture of press mud cake, effluents and consortia of useful microbial flora. This bio compost is prepared in the premises of the factories with a stipulated mixture of the constituents will be eco friendly and proved useful in increase in the yields of sugarcane and other crops. Besides, these bio composts also enhance the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil.
